Me and Miss Mavis.jpg

Artist Statement

I was born in Perth and have lived in Geraldton since 2008. Creativity has always been part of my life, with drawing and painting forming a quiet but constant thread from childhood through to adulthood.

Over time, painting became a more intentional and meditative practice — a way to slow down, pay attention, and make sense of the world around me. I began taking my art more seriously as I explored my own visual language, allowing space for intuition, reflection and personal style to emerge.

Much of my work begins in my sketchbook, often created en plein air. These early studies are about observation rather than accuracy — capturing atmosphere, colour, movement and small details that might otherwise be missed. Back in the studio, these impressions inform larger works, where the subject is often abstracted further as I distil it to its most essential elements. One painting frequently leads into the next, guided by memory, sensation and a strong sense of place.

After a period of stepping back while raising a family, I have returned to my practice with renewed focus and energy. I continue to explore the landscapes, flora and wildlife of my local environment, creating work that is thoughtful, expressive and deeply connected to place.

P.S. Studio morale — and occasional quality checks — are overseen by my assistant, Mavis (see photo).
